Disclosure: Digital 4 Africa builds websites, and this guide compares us with other providers. Every price is dated and sourced so you can check it.

A website quote in Kenya can be KES 15,000 or KES 500,000 for what sounds like the same job. The gap is rarely the design. It is what the quote leaves out: content, SEO, security, hosting, and who looks after the site once it is live.

This guide breaks down what a business website really costs in Kenya in 2026. We cover the build, the hosting and the maintenance, and what changes when you build with AI. Prices are in Kenyan shillings, with US dollars at about KES 129 to the dollar.

We have built websites since 2014 for organisations such as Naivas, Bamburi Group, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics and Africa Legal Network. The ranges below come from that work and from a fresh check of the market in October 2026.

How much does a website cost in Kenya? The quick answer

A business website in Kenya costs KES 20,000 to 180,000 to build in 2026, depending on who builds it and how many pages it needs. An online store costs KES 80,000 to 450,000. Then budget KES 3,500 to 15,000 a year for your domain and hosting, and KES 5,000 to 25,000 a month if you want it maintained.

Item Typical cost in Kenya (KES) Approx. USD How often
DIY site on a website builder 3,000 to 15,000 23 to 116 First year
Freelancer, 5 to 7 page business site 20,000 to 50,000 155 to 388 One-off
Agency, 5 to 10 page business site 50,000 to 180,000 388 to 1,395 One-off
E-commerce site with M-Pesa checkout 80,000 to 450,000 620 to 3,488 One-off
Corporate site or custom web app 180,000 to 500,000+ 1,395 to 3,876+ One-off
.co.ke domain 1,000 to 2,500 8 to 19 Every year
Shared hosting 2,500 to 12,000 19 to 93 Every year
Maintenance or care plan 5,000 to 25,000 39 to 194 Every month

Ranges checked in October 2026 against Kenyan providers’ published prices, Clutch reviews and our own indicative web design prices. USD at about KES 129.

What you are paying for: build, hosting and maintenance

Every website has three costs. Most quotes only show the first one.

  1. The build is a one-off cost. It covers planning, design, development, content and launch.
  2. Hosting and domain are yearly costs. Your domain is your address. Hosting is the server that keeps the site online.
  3. Maintenance is a monthly or yearly cost. It covers updates, backups, security and small changes.

So what does a website cost per month? For a typical 5 to 10 page business site, spread over three years, it works out at roughly KES 2,000 to 6,500 a month without a care plan. With a care plan, it is closer to KES 7,000 to 30,000 a month.

The build gets all the attention, but over three years the running costs can match it. Ask for all three in writing before you sign.

Website build costs in Kenya by type of website

The type of website sets the price more than anything else. Here is what each type costs, with a site we have built for each.

Website type Market range (KES) Digital 4 Africa (KES) Typical timeline
Landing page or one-page site 10,000 to 40,000 30,000 to 70,000 1 to 2 weeks
Business website, 5 to 10 pages 20,000 to 100,000 60,000 to 180,000 3 to 6 weeks
E-commerce website 80,000 to 450,000 150,000 to 450,000 6 to 12 weeks
Corporate, government or data portal 180,000 to 500,000+ 180,000 to 500,000+ 6 to 12 weeks
Custom web app 150,000+ Quoted per project 8 weeks+

Landing page: KES 10,000 to 70,000

A landing page is one focused page for a campaign, event or product launch. It needs a clear offer, a form or WhatsApp button, and fast loading on mobile data.

We built the website for the Nation Media Group Digital Summit held in Mombasa. Event and campaign sites like this sit at the top of the range because they carry speakers, agendas and registration.

Business website, 5 to 10 pages: KES 20,000 to 180,000

This is what most SMEs, consultancies and professional firms need. Expect a home page, about, services, contact and a blog, built on a content management system you can update yourself.

The low end of the range is usually a template with your logo added. The high end adds custom design, written content, on-page SEO and training. BAMM Tours, which runs car and bus hire across Kenya, and the law firm MMW Legal are both business sites we built in this tier. See our web design service for what is included.

E-commerce website: KES 80,000 to 450,000

An online store needs product pages, a cart, delivery options and payments. In Kenya, that means M-Pesa as well as cards.

We built the WooCommerce store for Jays Wines, one of Kenya’s largest drinks distributors. During COVID, it carried all of the company’s sales and kept the business running. For Naivas, Kenya’s largest supermarket chain, we built the corporate website and consult on its e-commerce experience.

Corporate, government or data portal: KES 180,000 to 500,000+

Large organisations need more pages, approval workflows, multiple editors and stronger security. Data portals also need search, filters and downloads.

Our work here includes Bamburi Group, East Africa’s cement and concrete manufacturer, and the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, which publishes Kenya’s official statistics. We also built the Make It East Africa data portal for the textile and apparel industry.

Custom web app: from KES 150,000

Booking systems, member portals, dashboards and marketplaces are software projects with a website on the front. They are priced on scope, not pages. If the app connects to your CRM or ERP, see our ERP and CRM systems work.

DIY, freelancer or agency: who builds it changes the price

The same five-page site can cost KES 5,000 or KES 150,000 depending on who builds it. Here is what each route costs and what you get for it.

Route Build cost (KES) Hourly rate Best for Main risk
Do it yourself 3,000 to 15,000 a year Your own time Testing an idea, very small budgets Weeks of your time, weak SEO
Freelancer 20,000 to 70,000 KES 1,500 to 8,000 Simple sites with a clear brief Support ends if they move on
Small studio 50,000 to 150,000 KES 3,200 to 6,300 SMEs wanting custom design Limited capacity for big projects
Established agency 100,000 to 500,000+ KES 6,500 to 19,000 Corporates, NGOs, online stores Higher upfront cost

Freelance rates come from Kenyan freelancing guides for 2026, which put freelancers at about USD 10 to 60 an hour. Studio and agency rates come from Clutch listings for Kenyan web design firms, which range from USD 25 to 149 an hour.

When each route makes sense

  • Do it yourself if you have more time than money and the site is a test. Our web design course teaches you to build and manage your own WordPress site.
  • Hire a freelancer for a simple brochure site, if you can check their past work and agree a written scope.
  • Hire a studio or agency when the site has to bring in leads, take payments, serve several editors or rank on Google.

Whoever you hire, get a fixed written quote. Make sure the domain, hosting and logins are registered in your name.

Hosting, domain and business email costs in Kenya

Affiliate disclosure: some links in this section are affiliate links. If you buy through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We only recommend services we use or set up for clients.

A small business site needs about KES 3,500 to 15,000 a year for its domain and hosting. Business email is extra, from free with your hosting up to about KES 900 per person a month.

Domain names: .co.ke or .com?

A .co.ke domain tells Kenyan customers you are a local business. Renewals run about KES 1,000 to 2,500 a year, depending on the registrar. A .com costs about KES 1,200 to 2,500 a year.

Watch the renewal price. Some registrars offer a first year for a few hundred shillings, then charge far more from year two. Register the domain in your own or your company’s name, never your designer’s. Our domains guide explains how to buy one safely.

Web hosting

Hosting option Typical cost Good for
Kenyan shared hosting (Truehost, HostPinnacle, Hosting.com Kenya) KES 2,400 to 12,000 a year Small sites, paying by M-Pesa, local support
Hostinger shared or WordPress hosting From about USD 2.99 a month (KES 390) on a 4-year term Fast WordPress hosting with global data centres
VPS hosting From about KES 1,100 to 1,400 a month in Kenya Busy sites, online stores, self-hosted apps
Managed cloud (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) Usage-based Large or high-traffic platforms

Read the renewal terms before you buy. Hostinger’s Premium plan renews at about USD 10.99 a month (KES 1,420) after the first term, which is normal across the industry. Long terms lock in the low price for longer.

We recommend Hostinger for its speed and WordPress tools. Local hosts suit you better if you want to pay by M-Pesa or prefer a Kenyan support line. Compare the options on our web hosting and VPS pages.

SSL certificate

Most hosts include a free SSL certificate through Let’s Encrypt. It puts the padlock in the browser bar. You only pay for SSL if you need a specialist certificate, which few small businesses do.

Business email

Provider Price per user Approx. KES a month
Mailboxes included with hosting Included 0
Zoho Mail Lite USD 1 a month 130
Microsoft 365 Business Basic USD 6 a month 775
Google Workspace Business Starter USD 7 a month 900

Prices are on annual billing, checked October 2026. Email on your own domain ([email protected]) builds more trust than a Gmail address. See our business email setup service.

Website maintenance costs in Kenya

Website maintenance in Kenya costs about KES 5,000 to 25,000 a month for a care plan. A small brochure site sits at the low end. An online store, a busy corporate site or a site with many editors sits at the high end.

What a care plan should include

  • Updates to WordPress, the theme and every plugin
  • Daily or weekly backups stored off the server
  • Security monitoring and malware clean-up
  • Uptime monitoring, so someone knows when the site goes down
  • Speed checks on mobile data
  • A set number of small content changes each month

Ask which of these a plan covers before comparing prices. A cheap plan that skips backups is not cheaper when the site breaks.

Doing it yourself

You can maintain a site yourself if someone on your team has a few hours a month. Budget KES 5,000 to 15,000 a year for premium security and backup plugins. Our WordPress website maintenance training teaches in-house teams to do this.

The cost of skipping it

Outdated plugins are the most common way WordPress sites get hacked. A clean-up, lost sales and damage to your Google rankings usually cost more than a year of maintenance. If you are not sure where your site stands, start with a website security audit.

What good maintenance looks like

We provide web development, maintenance and support for Africa Legal Network (ALN), one of Africa’s largest legal networks. Ongoing work on performance doubled the site’s speed. That is the point of a care plan: the site gets better over time, not just older.

Wix, Squarespace, Shopify or WordPress: what each costs in shillings

Hosted builders such as Wix, Squarespace and Shopify charge in dollars every month. WordPress is free software, but you pay for hosting and someone to set it up. Over three years, WordPress is usually the cheapest to run, while builders are the quickest to start.

Platform Plan for a business site USD a month (annual billing) Approx. KES a year Approx. KES over 3 years
Wix Light (no online payments) 17 26,300 79,000
Wix Core (online payments) 29 44,900 134,700
Squarespace Core 29 44,900 134,700
Shopify Basic 29 44,900 134,700, plus fees per sale
WordPress (self-hosted) Hosting, domain and premium plugins Varies 10,000 to 30,000 30,000 to 90,000
EmDash Open source, hosting only Varies Hosting only Hosting only

Plan prices checked October 2026, converted at about KES 129 to the dollar. Platform fees only: the build, content and your time are extra.

What the table does not show

  • Price rises. Squarespace raised its Core plan from USD 23 to USD 29 a month in July 2026. Builder prices are set in dollars, so a weaker shilling also raises your bill.
  • Transaction fees. Shopify adds a 2% fee on Basic when you use a payment gateway other than Shopify Payments, which is the usual setup for Kenyan stores.
  • M-Pesa. WooCommerce on WordPress has mature M-Pesa integrations. On hosted builders, M-Pesa usually needs a third-party app or gateway, so check before you commit.
  • Ownership. On a builder, you rent the platform. If you stop paying, the site goes offline, and moving it elsewhere usually means a rebuild.

Which should you choose?

Choose a builder if you want to launch this week and update the site yourself. Choose WordPress for most business sites and stores, especially if you sell with M-Pesa. Consider EmDash, Cloudflare’s new open-source CMS, for new builds where security matters most, keeping in mind it is still in beta.

Building your website with AI: DIY vs hiring a consultant

AI tools can build a working website in an afternoon for about KES 2,500 to 3,500 a month. The tool is the cheap part. Making the site secure, findable and in your name is where the real cost sits.

Doing it yourself with AI tools

Tools such as Lovable, Bolt and v0 turn a written description into a website. Wix and Hostinger also include AI builders in their plans. ChatGPT and Claude can write the code if you can run it.

AI tool Entry paid plan (USD a month) Approx. KES a month
v0 20 2,580
Lovable Pro 25 3,230
Bolt Pro 25 3,230
Wix or Hostinger AI builder Included in the hosting or builder plan See tables above

Prices checked October 2026. Most of these tools run on credits or tokens. A complex build can use a month’s allowance in days, so budget for top-ups.

A realistic first-year cost for a DIY AI site is KES 10,000 to 30,000. That covers one to three months of a tool, plus a domain and hosting. It does not count your time.

The hidden costs of AI-built sites

Working is not the same as ready. AI-built sites often ship with the same problems:

  • API keys or passwords left in the code
  • Databases open to anyone who finds them
  • Pages and admin areas with no proper login checks
  • Pages search engines and AI assistants cannot read
  • The domain or hosting registered in the tool’s or a freelancer’s name

Any one of these can cost more than the site did. Our guide on how to host a vibe-coded website covers the hosting side.

Hiring a consultant to build with AI

A consultant uses the same AI tools but checks every step. You get the speed of AI with the safety of an engineer’s review.

Route Typical cost (KES) What you get
DIY with an AI tool 10,000 to 30,000 in year one A fast prototype; security and SEO are on you
Audit of a site you built with AI 25,000 to 60,000 A list of what is exposed and what to fix
Fix an AI-built site for launch 60,000 to 250,000 Security fixed, domain and hosting set up, SEO and GEO added
Consultant builds it with AI Similar to a business website, often faster An AI-built site reviewed by an engineer from day one

The consultant prices are our vibe coding service ranges for 2026.

Which route fits you?

  • Go DIY for a prototype, an internal tool or a test of a business idea.
  • Get an audit before real customers, payments or personal data touch an AI-built site.
  • Hire a consultant when the site has to rank, sell or protect customer data from launch.

If your team wants to build with AI themselves, our 2-day AI training course covers the tools and the safety checks.

Website redesign costs in Kenya

A website redesign in Kenya typically costs KES 90,000 to 330,000 with an agency. A simple refresh of a small site can cost less. A redesign that also moves platform, for example from Wix to WordPress, costs more.

The biggest risk in a redesign is losing your Google rankings. A safe redesign does four things:

  1. Maps every old URL to its new one
  2. Sets up redirects before launch
  3. Carries over page titles, descriptions and content that already ranks
  4. Checks Google Search Console after launch for broken pages

If a quote does not mention redirects, ask about them. Skipping them can undo years of search traffic in a week. See our redesign and migration service for how we handle it.

What drives the price, and how to read a website quotation

Six things move a website price more than anything else. If two quotes differ a lot, one of these is usually why.

Cost driver Lower cost Higher cost
Number of pages 1 to 5 pages 15+ pages, or hundreds of products
Design A ready-made template Custom design around your brand
Features Contact form and WhatsApp button M-Pesa checkout, bookings, member logins
Content You supply all text and photos The provider writes copy and sources images
Languages One language Two or more languages
Search visibility Basic page titles Keyword research, schema, SEO and GEO

Languages add real work

Every extra language means translated pages, menus, forms and search settings. We recently built the website for Taza Legal, a corporate law firm formed from four Ethiopian practices, in English and Amharic. Each language version needs its own content and SEO, so budget for it from the start.

How to read a website quotation

A serious quote lists every item. When a quote says only “website design: KES 30,000”, ask what it includes. Check for these lines:

  • Design, with the number of revision rounds
  • Development, and the platform it is built on
  • Content: who writes it and who supplies photos
  • On-page SEO, schema markup and Google Search Console setup
  • Speed and security setup, including SSL
  • Training for your team
  • Domain and hosting, and whose name they are in
  • Maintenance after launch, and its monthly cost
  • Timeline and payment terms
  • Who owns the site, the code and the logins

Compare quotes line by line, not by the total. The cheapest quote often leaves out content, SEO or training, and those gaps show up later as a rebuild. Every Digital 4 Africa project starts with a free consultation and a fixed, written quote.

Web design companies in Kenya compared (2026)

Most Kenyan web design companies do not publish their prices. The tables below compare 20 providers, including Digital 4 Africa, on the evidence available, so you know what to expect before you ask for quotes.

How we compiled this: we used Clutch’s Kenya web design rankings (updated 20 October 2026), visibility in Google for Kenyan website-cost searches, and published price lists. Clutch notes it may earn a fee for some placements. We left out firms where web design is a small share of their work. Digital 4 Africa publishes this guide and is listed first. This is a comparison, not a ranking.

Why businesses choose Digital 4 Africa

We are not the cheapest option in this guide, and we say so openly. Businesses choose us when the website has to win customers, rank on Google and get cited by AI, and keep working for years.

We have built websites and AI solutions for hundreds of organisations, and supported over 10,000 clients and trainees through our training programmes.

Proof you can check

See every project on our websites we have built page, or read our client case studies.

What every project includes

  • Built to be found. On-page SEO, schema markup and pages AI assistants can read, as standard. Learn more about GEO and AEO.
  • Your name on everything. Domains, hosting and logins are registered to you, so you are never locked in.
  • Fixed, written quotes. You know the price before work starts.
  • Training. Your team learns to update the site without calling a developer.
  • Certified expertise. We are a certified solutions provider with Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Meta, ERPNext and Frappe.

When we are not the right fit

If your budget is under KES 30,000, a freelancer or a website builder will serve you better for now. If you only need a one-week campaign page, a builder may be enough. We would rather tell you that than sell you more than you need.

Website costs across Africa

Website prices vary widely across Africa, but the same rules apply everywhere: compare quotes line by line, and plan for local payments such as M-Pesa, MTN MoMo or Airtel Money.
