EmDash CMS Websites and WordPress Migration in Kenya and Africa

Cloudflare's new open-source CMS, set up properly by a team that has built on WordPress since 2014.

EmDash CMS is Cloudflare’s open-source answer to WordPress. It runs each plugin in its own sandbox, loads pages fast from Cloudflare’s global network and lets AI agents manage content alongside your team.

It is also new. Digital 4 Africa helps you decide whether EmDash fits your website today, then plans, builds or migrates it with the care a young platform needs.

We work with clients in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa.

What Is EmDash CMS?

A modern content management system, built for security and AI

EmDash is a free, open-source content management system that Cloudflare released on 1 April 2026 and describes as a spiritual successor to WordPress. It is written in TypeScript, built on the Astro web framework and designed to run on Cloudflare Workers, with the option to run on your own server.

Its headline change is plugin security. In WordPress, plugins can reach almost anything on the site. In EmDash, each plugin runs in its own sandbox and can only use the permissions it declares upfront.

It also treats AI as a first-class user. Every EmDash site ships with a built-in MCP server, agent skills and a command line tool, so AI agents can draft content, upload media and manage the site under your control.

Who EmDash suits today

Content-led sites such as blogs, news and publications
Organisations worried about plugin security

Teams that want AI agents to help manage content
Sites where page speed matters most

EmDash vs WordPress

Which content management system should you choose?

We compare the two on how they are built, how secure they are, how mature the ecosystem is and what they cost to run. EmDash is moving fast, so we review this table regularly. Last checked: October 2026.

The short answer

Choose WordPress for online stores, M-Pesa payments and sites that rely on specific plugins. Consider EmDash for a new, content-led website where plugin security, speed and AI-assisted publishing matter more than a large plugin catalogue.

WordPress EmDash
Built with PHP and MySQL, on traditional hosting TypeScript and Astro, on Cloudflare Workers or a Node.js server
Plugin security Plugins can access almost the whole site. Most vulnerabilities start there Each plugin runs in a sandbox with declared permissions, when hosted on Cloudflare
Ecosystem Over 20 years old, with tens of thousands of plugins and themes Released in April 2026, with a small but growing set of plugins
Editing Familiar editor, plus page builders such as WPBakery Clean admin panel with structured content. No drag-and-drop page builder at launch
AI features Added through plugins Built in, with an MCP server, agent skills and a command line tool
Online stores and M-Pesa Proven, with WooCommerce and M-Pesa gateways Built-in x402 support for charging for content. For stores and M-Pesa, we still recommend WordPress
Hosting Any PHP host, from budget shared hosting upwards Best on Cloudflare. On other hosts, the plugin sandbox is not available
Best for Most business websites, online stores and content teams New, content-led sites where security, speed and AI matter most

Is EmDash Ready?

An honest view of where the platform stands, so you can decide with your eyes open.

Is EmDash Ready for Business Websites?

Ready for the right projects. Not yet for every project.

EmDash launched as a version 0.1 developer preview in April 2026 and has been updated frequently since. In August 2026, Cloudflare reported moving its own high-traffic blog onto EmDash and said version 1.0 was coming soon. That is a strong signal of confidence.

There are still trade-offs to weigh. The plugin sandbox, EmDash’s main security feature, depends on Cloudflare’s runtime. On other hosts, EmDash falls back to a simpler setup without it. The plugin and theme ecosystem is still small, and there was no drag-and-drop page builder at launch.

Our advice: use EmDash for new, content-led sites and pilots now. For online stores, M-Pesa checkouts or sites that depend on specific WordPress plugins, stay on WordPress and review again after version 1.0 settles.

Choose EmDash now if:

You are starting a new website
Your site is mostly content, not a store
Plugin security is a priority
You are happy to host on Cloudflare

Stay on WordPress for now if:

You sell online or take M-Pesa
You rely on specific WordPress plugins
Your team needs a drag-and-drop builder
You cannot afford any platform risk this year

WordPress to EmDash Migration

Move your content, keep your rankings, and leave the plugin baggage behind.

Migrating From WordPress to EmDash

What moves across, what gets rebuilt and how your rankings stay safe

EmDash can import WordPress content from a standard export file or through its exporter plugin, including posts, pages, media and custom post types. That part is quick.

Your design and features are a different story. WordPress themes and plugins do not run on EmDash, so the theme is rebuilt in Astro and each plugin is replaced with an EmDash plugin, a custom build or a simpler approach. This is where most of the effort goes, and where a careful plan saves you from surprises.

We test the whole migration on a staging site first, so your current WordPress site stays live until the new one is ready.

Our migration process:

Audit your content, plugins and traffic
Test the import on a staging site
Rebuild the theme in Astro
Replace or rebuild each plugin
Map every URL and set 301 redirects
Launch on your Cloudflare account
Check Search Console after launch

Indicative 2026 prices in Kenyan shillings

With Digital 4 Africa, a new EmDash website typically costs KES 150,000 to 450,000, and a WordPress to EmDash migration costs KES 120,000 to 400,000. Most clients start with a readiness assessment from KES 25,000.

EmDash itself is free. You pay for design, development and content, plus Cloudflare usage, which is billed by Cloudflare to your own account.

FAQs About EmDash CMS

Straight answers on cost, readiness, migration and WordPress

EmDash is a free, open-source content management system released by Cloudflare on 1 April 2026 as a modern successor to WordPress. It is written in TypeScript, built on Astro, runs best on Cloudflare Workers and runs each plugin in its own sandbox for better security.

Yes. EmDash is open source under the MIT licence, so there is no licence fee. You pay for hosting, usually Cloudflare usage billed to your own account, and for any design, development or support you need.

For the right projects, yes. Cloudflare reported running its own high-traffic blog on EmDash in August 2026 and said version 1.0 was coming soon. The ecosystem is still young, so we recommend it for new, content-led sites and pilots rather than online stores or plugin-heavy sites.

Choose WordPress for online stores, M-Pesa checkouts and sites that rely on specific plugins. Consider EmDash for a new, content-led site where plugin security, speed and AI-assisted publishing matter most. We help you decide with a readiness assessment.

Yes. EmDash can import WordPress posts, pages, media and custom post types from a standard export file or its exporter plugin. Your theme must be rebuilt in Astro and your plugins replaced, so we plan and test the full migration on a staging site first.

No. EmDash does not run WordPress code, so each plugin needs an EmDash equivalent, a custom plugin or a simpler approach. We list every plugin you use during the assessment and show you how each one will be handled.

No, but it is the best option. EmDash can run on any Node.js server, but its plugin sandbox, the main security feature, depends on Cloudflare’s runtime. On other hosts, the sandbox is not available.

EmDash has built-in support for x402, a standard for charging for content online. For online stores and M-Pesa checkouts, WordPress with WooCommerce remains the proven option, and we recommend it for now.

EmDash is built on Astro, which produces fast, lightweight pages that search engines and AI assistants can read easily. Cloudflare reported top Lighthouse performance scores after moving its blog to EmDash. Good content, structure and redirects still matter, and we handle those in every build.

Yes. Every EmDash site includes a built-in MCP server, agent skills and a command line tool, so AI agents can draft content, upload media and manage the site. We set this up with safe permissions and human review.

EmDash is a new platform, so no agency has a long EmDash track record yet. We bring over a decade of building websites, WordPress and modern JavaScript projects, and we start every client with an assessment or pilot so the risk stays low.
