Mobile App Development in Kenya and Across Africa

Android, iPhone, iPad, web and USSD apps. Designed, built, published and kept running by one team in Nairobi.

Your customers are on their phones. Most of them use Android, many watch every megabyte of data, and some still use feature phones. Your app should work for all of them.

Digital 4 Africa designs and builds mobile apps for businesses, startups, NGOs and institutions in Kenya and across Africa. We handle the whole journey: UX design, development, M-Pesa and AI integrations, store publishing, marketing and maintenance.

We build native and cross-platform apps with Kotlin, Swift, Flutter and React Native, web apps with React and Next.js, and USSD services that reach any phone.

Mobile App Development Services

Do You Need an Android App, an iPhone App, a Web App or USSD?

Mobile app development is the work of designing, building, testing and publishing software for phones and tablets. It covers the app people download, the backend that stores their data and the admin tools your team uses every day.

For most businesses in Kenya, the best start is an Android or cross-platform app. Add a web app for staff and partners, and USSD for customers without smartphones or data. We help you choose, then build what fits.

Over 90% of Phones Run Android

Android runs on over 90% of mobile devices in Kenya, according to StatCounter data for 2026. We design for it first.

Live on Both Stores

Our team’s apps are on Google Play and the App Store, from a Kenyan budgeting app to a US messaging app.

Your Name on Everything

Store accounts, source code and data belong to you, not to us.

One Team, Start to Finish

Design, build, publishing, marketing and maintenance under one roof, with partners for specialist work.

Apps Built for How Africa Uses Phones

Six things we plan for that template agencies often miss

Mobile App, Web App or USSD?

Each one wins in a different situation. Many businesses use two.

Start with your users. How often will they use it, what phones do they have and do they have data? The answer usually points to one of four routes.

Not sure which one you need?

Tell us who your users are and what they need to do. We will recommend the route that fits your budget, even when that means a smaller project.

Publishing on Google Play and the App Store

The last step is where many launches stall. We handle it with you.

Building the app is only half the job. Each store has its own accounts, fees, forms and review process, and the rules change often.

Google Play charges a one-time USD 25 registration fee. Apple charges USD 99 a year for its Developer Program.

New personal Google Play accounts created after 13 November 2023 must run a closed test with at least 12 testers for 14 continuous days before they can publish. Organisation accounts are exempt, so we usually recommend registering as an organisation. Both stores ask organisations for a D-U-N-S number, which can take a few weeks to issue.

One rule we never break. The developer accounts are registered in your name or your company’s name. Not ours, and not a freelancer’s.

Before you submit your app

Register as an organisation if you are a business. It avoids the 12-tester rule on Google Play
Apply for a D-U-N-S number early. Both stores need one for organisation accounts
Publish a privacy policy page before you submit
Complete Google’s Data safety form and Apple’s App Privacy details accurately
Keep your Apple membership paid. If it lapses, your app leaves the App Store
Plan for yearly updates. Both stores raise their technical requirements every year

How We Build Your App

Four stages from your first idea to an app people use

1. Discover and Scope

A call to understand your users, goals and budget. We recommend an app, web app or USSD, then send a clear scope and quote.

2. Design and Prototype

Wireframes and a clickable prototype you can try on your own phone before development starts.

3. Build and Test

Development in short cycles with regular test builds, checked on real Android and iOS devices.

4. Launch and Support

We publish to the stores in your name, train your team and stay on to maintain and grow the app.

App Development Across Africa

Kenya first. Built for the whole continent.

We are based in Nairobi and Kenya is our home market. We build apps for clients across East, West and Southern Africa, including Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa, and for organisations that work in many countries at once.

Each market has its own payment rails and rules. We plan around mobile money in East Africa, payment providers such as Paystack and Flutterwave in West Africa, local USSD approvals and each country’s data protection law.

Most projects run remotely, with on-site visits when a project needs them. We quote in USD, KES or your local currency.

FAQs About App Development in Kenya and Africa

Straight answers on cost, timelines, stores, M-Pesa and ownership

At Digital 4 Africa, a simple app or MVP costs KES 250,000 to 600,000. A business app with logins, M-Pesa payments and an admin panel costs KES 600,000 to 1.5 million. Complex platforms such as marketplaces and fintech apps start from KES 1.5 million. A USSD service costs KES 80,000 to 250,000 plus code fees. Prices are indicative, exclude store fees and were last checked in October 2026.

A USSD service takes 2 to 6 weeks, plus time for code approval. A web app takes 6 to 16 weeks. A cross-platform MVP usually takes 2 to 5 months, and a native or complex app takes 3 to 6 months or more. Allow extra time for store review, and about three weeks for a first launch on a new personal Google Play account.

In Kenya, start with Android or a cross-platform app. Over 90% of mobile devices in Kenya run Android, according to StatCounter data for 2026. Add iOS early if your users are in South Africa, in the diaspora or in premium segments, where iPhone use is higher.

A native app is built separately for each platform, in Kotlin for Android and Swift for iPhone and iPad. It gives the best performance and full access to device features. A cross-platform app uses one codebase, usually Flutter or React Native, for both platforms. It costs less, launches faster and suits most business apps.

Choose a mobile app when people will use it often or need phone features such as the camera, location, notifications or offline use. Choose a web app for portals, dashboards and internal tools, or to launch quickly without the app stores. Choose USSD to reach people with feature phones or no data. Many of our clients combine two of these.

It depends on the provider and the type of code. At the time of writing, Africa’s Talking lists shared Safaricom codes at KES 10,000 to 40,000, with users charged about KES 1 per session plus a small infrastructure fee. Dedicated codes cost more and need approval from the Communications Authority of Kenya and each mobile network. Our build fee is separate.

Google Play charges a one-time registration fee of USD 25. Apple charges USD 99 a year for the Apple Developer Program. You pay these fees directly, in your own name. Our publishing service covers account setup, store listings, privacy forms and review, and costs KES 15,000 to 40,000 per store.

Personal Google Play developer accounts created after 13 November 2023 must run a closed test with at least 12 testers for 14 continuous days before they can apply to publish. Organisation accounts are exempt. If you are a business, we recommend an organisation account. You will need a D-U-N-S number to register one.

Yes. We integrate M-Pesa through Safaricom’s Daraja API, including STK Push payment prompts, Paybill and Till payments, payouts and transaction status checks. We also connect Airtel Money and card payments through providers such as Pesapal, Flutterwave, Paystack and Stripe.

You do. Developer accounts are registered in your name or your company’s name, and you receive the source code and all logins once the project is paid in full. If you ever move to another team, everything goes with you.

Yes. We start with an audit of the code, security and data handling, from KES 50,000. You then get a fixed quote to clean up the app, connect it to a proper backend and publish it to Google Play and the App Store.

Our maintenance and support retainers cost KES 35,000 to 250,000 a month, depending on the size of the app and the response times you need. Google and Apple raise their technical requirements every year, so apps that are not updated can lose visibility or be removed from the stores.

Yes. We are based in Nairobi and work with clients across Africa and beyond. Our team was part of the development team behind The Social App, a messaging app based in the United States. We deliver remotely, travel on-site when needed and quote in USD, KES or your local currency.

We use Kotlin and Jetpack Compose for Android, Swift and SwiftUI for iPhone and iPad, Flutter and React Native for cross-platform apps, and React and Next.js for web apps. Backends run on Node.js, Python, Laravel, Firebase, Supabase or Frappe. For specialist work, we bring in trusted partners and contractors.

Yes. We add chat assistants, document and receipt scanning, smart search, recommendations and voice features, using models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. Our budgeting app, Kamp, includes Meelo, an AI money coach that suggests ways to save.

Let's Build Your App

Tell us what you want to build. We will recommend the right route, whether that is an app, a web app or USSD.

Most app projects go wrong before the first line of code. The wrong platform, a scope nobody wrote down, store accounts in someone else’s name, or no plan for updates.

We work the other way round. We start with your users, your budget and how your customers pay. Then we design, build, publish and support the app with you.

Share your idea, your users and your timeline. We reply within one business hour, Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm East Africa Time.
